This tea comes from a particular type of hydrangea plant found in the high mountains of South Korea (not to be confused with the flowers in your garden). This tea has a light golden colour with a naturally sweet taste that remains in the mouth. The tea hydrangea is a natural sweetener, comparable to stevia. The leaves of this particular type of hydrangea contain the sweetener dulcin, also known as phyllodulcin, which is about 200 times sweeter than sugar.
Hydrangea tea is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat periodontitis and as an anti-allergic. In Korea, it is also drunk as a slimming remedy and for constipation or irritable bowel syndrome.
